Total Alkalinity Test
To test your Total Alkalinity you will need a normal swimming pool test kit. The test for swimming pools is the same as we need to test our ponds.
It is amazing how many people worry about pH and ammonia, but very few even know about testing their TA.
We have on numerous occasions seen ponds with fish problems, after testing we find the TA down to 20 - 30 and the pH fluctuating daily, and the fish not feeling too good.
To raise TA you must add Bicarbonate of soda.
Even in a stable, old pond, TA has to be tested, and corrected monthly.

This test was done on fresh municipal water, the result was 2 drops = 20ppm
That is why you should test for TA regularly.
Fresh water is not always good for your koi straight from the tap.
Directions for use:
- Fill large tube to lower (dash) line.
- No need to add solution 4 as there will be no chlorine in your pond. (hopefully)
- Add 1 drop solution 5 and swirl, it will look like this. (photo 1)
- Add solution 3, counting each drop, (swirling between drops) until water makes a permanent colour change away from blue, it will still look a bit yellow. (photo 2)
- Multiply drops of solution 3 used by 10 to get reading. Do not compare to container.
- Koi ponds should be kept between 80 and 150, we try to keep ours constant around 100. (10 drops)
